A once upon a time or Now Is Everywhere Story!
A Fisherman was sitting by the lake with his line in the water. An Adolescent was walking up, bored to tears.. because Adolescents are usually bored, like “Why Am I Here?” Bored.. The Adolescent saw the Fisherman sitting there, and the Adolescent thought that he would walk over there, because he figured the Fisherman was as bored as he was.
Just as the Adolescent walked over within voice distance of the Fisherman, the Fisherman pulled the line out of the water, and grabbed the line, not the hook. The Fisherman made a point to pull the line up and show the hook with nothing on it. The Adolescent looked at the Fisherman and once the Fisherman understood the Adolescent saw the empty hook with no bait on it, the fisherman recast the hook, line, and sinker way out into the lake. There was a click at the end of the line because how much line is on a reel? Enough to get to the end of it, especially if you're a good caster. Of course, this caught the Adolescent's attention, he looked around and asked, “Where's the fish?” The Fisherman's sharp reply was, “Who's fishing?” The fisherman reached for another beer, and he caught one. Which of course caught the adolescent attention again, like a double take. Course now the adolescent was not quite as bored as he was when he was walking up into his life. Who's gonna show up, me all by myself? Internal dialog, that's boredom to tears. The Fisherman being so happy about being present... looked at the Adolescent with twinkly eyes, cause the Fisherman within his being understood he'd caught a Big One.
The Adolescent didn't understand why the Fisherman would ever fish with a hook that wasn't baited. He'd once looked in the encyclopedia about fishing, the bottom line was: use bait. So he couldn't understand why this guy wasn't using bait. Obviously he was a fisherman because he had all the tackle, gear, and a pole. From boredom you go to confusion, adolescently. So this intrigued the Adolescent, a Fisherman was fishing not using bait! The confusion came from the Fisherman's statement when he asked the Adolescent, “Who's fishing?”
The Fisherman looked at the Adolescent and said, “Here, you wanna try it?” The Adolescent said, “Sure, I read about it in an Encyclopedia Britannica, I know all about it. Never experienced it in my life, but I'm sure I can catch a Big One.” The Adolescent, no longer bored, imagined something bigger than his own ignorance, and catching it.
The Fisherman handed the Adolescent his extra pole. He just snuck that along with him because he didn't pay for the extra pole tag, just in case it was good fishing. The fishing pole had a line on it but no hook. Course the Adolescent had read the whole thing about fishing about how to tie a hook on a fishing line. He'd never done it before, so the hook kept slipping off as the Fisherman snickered. The Fisherman asked the Adolescent, “Would you like help with that?” The Adolescent was thoroughly frustrated because the encyclopedia, [or whatever you call it maybe it was the bible], didn't know exactly how to tie a hook on a line, even with an example. The Adolescent, thoroughly frustrated and no longer bored, figured he didn't learn everything in school like he thought he did, but he was still curious. He said, “Sure.”
The Fisherman first asked the Adolescent for the pole. Ever tried to tie a fishing hook on a line when somebody else is holding the pole? It would be like Dick Cheney hunting quail. So quickly, the Fisherman tied the hook on the line. And the Adolescent says, “Show me that again.” The Fisherman just handed him the pole, and figured he'd learn with a couple hooks in his hand how to tie the knot. The Adolescent figured now he was ready to fish because in his Encyclopedia Britannica there was nothing about a sinker. The Fisherman knew that, because he'd wrote the Encyclopedia Britannica, especially the part about fishing. The Fisherman said, “I'm gonna show you how to cast”, so he reeled in his line. He kinda jerked the line a little bit, reeled a little bit, jerked and reeled, jerked and reeled, just to show the Adolescent what you might do if a fish was on your line. You might catch it. The line very gently came out of the water. The Fisherman, holding the pole in one hand, grabbed the line with the other hand and looked at the empty hook. He knew he'd already caught the Big One. The Fisherman grabbed the pole in his casting hand, and looked at the adolescent, “I'm gonna show you how to cast.” The Fisherman told the Adolescent “Listen for the sounds”, the Adolescent said, “What sounds?” The Fisherman said, “This sound.” Whirrr... Click. Then he put the pole back down in his pole holder. The Fisherman looked at the Adolescent and said, “You try it.” Of course, the Fisherman understood the Adolescent hadn't put a sinker on his line yet, because that was in another chapter of the encyclopedia. The Adolescent, being very astute in music, heard the sounds. The Adolescent said, “I could make the same sounds as you did. I'm a music major.”
Being a visual artist, musically inclined, the Adolescent said, “I know how this works” and he grabbed the pole in his casting hand, not that he knew what that hand was, he'd never use it before in his life. He reeled the pole back over his shoulder ready to cast. Whooosh... Click... The line was supposed to go out into the middle of the lake, the Adolescent's cast went two feet out in front of him and landed on the ground. The Fisherman said, “That's a pretty good cast if you're fishing for dry land.” Well, from boredom went to confusion, to frustration, to a question. Course the Fisherman looked at the Adolescent and said, “There could be a problem with your casting technique, would you like a sinker with that?” Course the Adolescent being very like a type-A personality overachiever threw the pole down, went over and kicked a rock with his toe. It was a very big rock and he had a little toe. Insert anger/passion scenario there. The Fisherman, not fishing but caught the Big One, just couldn't keep from laughing cause the Fisherman had a broken toe too. He got it as an Adolescent learning to fish from the biggest asshole he'd ever met in his Life, his Dad.
Anyway, after the Adolescent broke his toe, the Fisherman once again reeled in his line to look at the empty hook and let the adolescent understand, the Fisherman wasn't fishing. He was a little nearsighted so he had to get the hook, still totally and completely free of bait (cause the fisherman already caught the Big One, the Adolescent), very close to his face. The Fisherman showed the Adolescent the hook and a new thing, the sinker, it helps with casting. Anyway the Fisherman proceed to put a sinker on the line of the Adolescent's fishing pole. With the sinker tied onto to Adolescent's line, the Fisherman once again put his pole in his casting hand and the Adolescent says, “I understand this, it's like a sound when the line goes back”. The Fisherman took the pole and it was a Swooosh... making sure he knows where the hook is, because there's a little sinker on it that moves the line quickly in whatever direction the pole's moving too, which is usually out in the lake. And when the pole goes vertical, there's a click. When the fishing pole goes straight out in front of the fisherman, the line and the reel move out very very quickly traveling at a velocity that only a sinker would know. And it goes ker-plop in the lake and the Fisherman puts his pole in the pole stand. He looks at the Adolescent and says, “You got that?” The Adolescent says, “Sure I understand everything.” The adolescent had no idea what Everything was... at all. So the Adolescent said, “Which one's my casting hand?”, and he didn't know which one he had, so he put it in one of them. The Teenager went Whooopp... Click... and the line landed on the ground right in front of him. And the sinker, doing what sinkers do, went right under the ground. Then with both hands the Adolescent grabbed the pole and went Schwooopp... and the pole went in front of him, and the line went behind him, and the sinker laughed. The Fisherman said, “Now you're fishing for fish behind yourself? Good Luck.”
Anyway, the Fisherman said to the Adolescent, “Let me hear another click, cause there's two clicks, one when you release the line, one when you click the line. You don't click the line too soon, otherwise you'll be fishing on shore. You don't set the line until it settles. And then you click the line and reel back the tension.” SO the Fisherman looked at the Adolescent and said, “Come on, reel in your line, look where the hook is.” For the first time the Adolescent noticed there was a hook on his line. The Fisherman once again reels in his line just to show the Adolescent how to cast. Anyway, the Adolescent reeled back the pole, thrust it forward, clicked the line, and hooked the hook in his ear. The Fisherman said, “Now you've got some bait.”

So he couldn't understand why this guy wasn't using bait. Obviously he was a fisherman because he had all the tackle, gear, and a pole. From boredom you go to confusion, adolescently. So this intrigued the Adolescent, a Fisherman was fishing not using bait! The confusion came from the Fisherman's statement when he asked the Adolescent, “Who's fishing?”
The Fisherman looked at the Adolescent and said, “Here, you wanna try it?” The Adolescent said, “Sure, I read about it in an Encyclopedia Britannica, I know all about it. Never experienced it in my life, but I'm sure I can catch a Big One.” The Adolescent, no longer bored, imagined something bigger than his own ignorance, and catching it.
The Fisherman handed the Adolescent his extra pole. He just snuck that along with him because he didn't pay for the extra pole tag, just in case it was good fishing. The fishing pole had a line on it but no hook. Course the Adolescent had read the whole thing about fishing about how to tie a hook on a fishing line. He'd never done it before, so the hook kept slipping off as the Fisherman snickered. The Fisherman asked the Adolescent, “Would you like help with that?” The Adolescent was thoroughly frustrated because the encyclopedia, [or whatever you call it maybe it was the bible], didn't know exactly how to tie a hook on a line, even with an example. The Adolescent, thoroughly frustrated and no longer bored, figured he didn't learn everything in school like he thought he did, but he was still curious. He said, “Sure.”
The Fisherman first asked the Adolescent for the pole. Ever tried to tie a fishing hook on a line when somebody else is holding the pole? It would be like Dick Cheney hunting quail. So quickly, the Fisherman tied the hook on the line. And the Adolescent says, “Show me that again.” The Fisherman just handed him the pole, and figured he'd learn with a couple hooks in his hand how to tie the knot. The Adolescent figured now he was ready to fish because in his Encyclopedia Britannica there was nothing about a sinker. The Fisherman knew that, because he'd wrote the Encyclopedia Britannica, especially the part about fishing. The Fisherman said, “I'm gonna show you how to cast”, so he reeled in his line. He kinda jerked the line a little bit, reeled a little bit, jerked and reeled, jerked and reeled, just to show the Adolescent what you might do if a fish was on your line. You might catch it. The line very gently came out of the water. The Fisherman, holding the pole in one hand, grabbed the line with the other hand and looked at the empty hook. He knew he'd already caught the Big One. The Fisherman grabbed the pole in his casting hand, and looked at the adolescent, “I'm gonna show you how to cast.” The Fisherman told the Adolescent “Listen for the sounds”, the Adolescent said, “What sounds?” The Fisherman said, “This sound.” Whirrr... Click. Then he put the pole back down in his pole holder. The Fisherman looked at the Adolescent and said, “You try it.” Of course, the Fisherman understood the Adolescent hadn't put a sinker on his line yet, because that was in another chapter of the encyclopedia. The Adolescent, being very astute in music, heard the sounds. The Adolescent said, “I could make the same sounds as you did. I'm a music major.”
Being a visual artist, musically inclined, the Adolescent said, “I know how this works” and he grabbed the pole in his casting hand, not that he knew what that hand was, he'd never use it before in his life. He reeled the pole back over his shoulder ready to cast. Whooosh... Click... The line was supposed to go out into the middle of the lake, the Adolescent's cast went two feet out in front of him and landed on the ground. The Fisherman said, “That's a pretty good cast if you're fishing for dry land.” Well, from boredom went to confusion, to frustration, to a question. Course the Fisherman looked at the Adolescent and said, “There could be a problem with your casting technique, would you like a sinker with that?” Course the Adolescent being very like a type-A personality overachiever threw the pole down, went over and kicked a rock with his toe. It was a very big rock and he had a little toe. Insert anger/passion scenario there. The Fisherman, not fishing but caught the Big One, just couldn't keep from laughing cause the Fisherman had a broken toe too. He got it as an Adolescent learning to fish from the biggest asshole he'd ever met in his Life, his Dad.
Anyway, after the Adolescent broke his toe, the Fisherman once again reeled in his line to look at the empty hook and let the adolescent understand, the Fisherman wasn't fishing. He was a little nearsighted so he had to get the hook, still totally and completely free of bait (cause the fisherman already caught the Big One, the Adolescent), very close to his face. The Fisherman showed the Adolescent the hook and a new thing, the sinker, it helps with casting. Anyway the Fisherman proceed to put a sinker on the line of the Adolescent's fishing pole. With the sinker tied onto to Adolescent's line, the Fisherman once again put his pole in his casting hand and the Adolescent says, “I understand this, it's like a sound when the line goes back”. The Fisherman took the pole and it was a Swooosh... making sure he knows where the hook is, because there's a little sinker on it that moves the line quickly in whatever direction the pole's moving too, which is usually out in the lake. And when the pole goes vertical, there's a click. When the fishing pole goes straight out in front of the fisherman, the line and the reel move out very very quickly traveling at a velocity that only a sinker would know. And it goes ker-plop in the lake and the Fisherman puts his pole in the pole stand. He looks at the Adolescent and says, “You got that?” The Adolescent says, “Sure I understand everything.” The adolescent had no idea what Everything was... at all. So the Adolescent said, “Which one's my casting hand?”, and he didn't know which one he had, so he put it in one of them. The Teenager went Whooopp... Click... and the line landed on the ground right in front of him. And the sinker, doing what sinkers do, went right under the ground. Then with both hands the Adolescent grabbed the pole and went Schwooopp... and the pole went in front of him, and the line went behind him, and the sinker laughed. The Fisherman said, “Now you're fishing for fish behind yourself? Good Luck.”
Anyway, the Fisherman said to the Adolescent, “Let me hear another click, cause there's two clicks, one when you release the line, one when you click the line. You don't click the line too soon, otherwise you'll be fishing on shore. You don't set the line until it settles. And then you click the line and reel back the tension.” SO the Fisherman looked at the Adolescent and said, “Come on, reel in your line, look where the hook is.” For the first time the Adolescent noticed there was a hook on his line. The Fisherman once again reels in his line just to show the Adolescent how to cast. Anyway, the Adolescent reeled back the pole, thrust it forward, clicked the line, and hooked the hook in his ear. The Fisherman said, “Now you've got some bait.”
